Guidelines for HORT 605 Individual Projects The class project for HORT 605 is intended to create a series of new information resources on the World Wide Web. Successful completion of the project will: demonstrate the student's proficiency in preparing and serving files on the Web; allow the student to work with a mentor/technical adviser in the creation of an educational resource for the Web; add information resources to Aggie Horticulture or other departmental home page; create a Web site for a teaching program; or, create a Web site for a topic of public interest. serve as a starting point for a Web presence for the student in his/her later professional career. The Project Create a Web site with the characteristics listed below and serve it on the Web for at least one week. Characteristics of the Web Site Individual projects will conform to the following characteristics: Subject matter will be agreed upon in advance by prior discussion with one of the teachers and a technical adviser/mentor. Web site will contain a minimum of 30 external links to related subject matter at other WWW sites. Web site will contain a minimum of 20 internal links to documents created by the student, or documents that are in the public domain (i.e., not copyrighted material from books or magazines). Site will contain at least 3 links requiring helper applications on the client computer (i.e., PowerPoint slide set, Adobe Acrobat pdf file, QuickTime movie, Camtasia Flash file, etc.). Some, but not all, of the Web pages in the site must contain graphics in a format that can be viewed using Internet Explorer, FireFox, or other modern Web browser. The Web page will be set up in the students' folder on webtutor.tamu.edu. The site must be "up" for at least a week to allow for comparative browsing by other students and "browsing for grades" by the teachers. Written concept statement Write a brief paragraph describing the goals for your project Web site and the target audience. The site may be of any subject matter, related or unrelated to Texas A & M University. Select a technical advisor who is knowledgeable in the project subject matter and who is willing to look over the Web site. This person does not necessarily have to be a professor. Email the concept statement and the name of your technical adviser to Dr. Dan. Project Presentations Students will deliver a 15 minute presentation of their Web sites in a seminar format. Technical adviser/mentors, other faculty, other graduate students, and guests of project presenters will be invited to attend this session to be held in HFSB 101, and at the distant sites as needed. This session will highlight the accomplishments of students and increase the awareness of others in attendance of the power of the Web.
