The Holistic Garden is a garden in which anyone who wants to garden can do so. It is also a garden which works with the natural ecosystem of which it is part. The Holistic Garden employs organic techniques almost exclusively. The garden is designed to illustrate many gardening techniques with a wide array of garden plants and for persons of various physical abilities. The facility is a resource garden for use in courses that teach garden science, vegetable crops, and sociohorticulture. At one time many students came to the university with ample knowledge of gardening, but today most have had no prior gardening experience. The garden was developed as an outdoor laboratory for support of the garden science courses. It is also used to demonstrate adaptive techiniques and tools for students in Hort 335, a course in sociohorticulture which puts much emphasis on horticultural therapy and gardens as a tool in neighborhood rejuvenation.
